Intensive Tutorial - System Admin in a
10.x Environment Review: 17 September
by Ruth Rowlands
Well, I came along for this day not knowing quite whether I'd be left way behind, and find that my prerequisite knowledge was insufficient, since I have never done a great deal of System Administration, or whether it would be fairly superficial, and I would find I knew most things already! Happily neither was the case - I felt I learnt more about HP-UX 10 and some of the specific issues and considerations that arise, and I also came away with a much better understanding of how to do a REALLY good job administering a system from the very start.
Bill Hassell from the Atlanta Response Center provided a superb set of notes to go with his talk, (which is why this writeup only serves as an overview of the day), and even though he didn't manage to work his way through all the notes due to eager audience participation etc, he did cover a large part of the system administrator's duties in his talk whilst also making it fun, and drawing on real examples he has experienced in his work in the Response Center - within that environment, it is so easy to see how people go wrong in their administration, and some of the dire consequences involved. To have these presented along with a philosophy specific to HP-UX 10,x on how to administer a system, meant that everyone must have come away with some added value after the day. Many thanks Bill for fitting this into your very tight schedule.
