Tuesday 22 September 1998 - HP-UX Beginners Day -
a one day seminar by Bill Hassell from the HP Atlanta Response Centre
You've got a new HP-UX box but don't know much about it? Come to the HP-UX
Beginners Day and learn the basics of HP-UX. The day will include some history of Unix
and HP-UX, the basic commands for HP-UX and pointers to documentation, both online
and through the Internet. We'll cover basic file commands, directories, simple security
principles, printing, and even a short course on using vi. The Beginners Day is designed
exclusively for the new and inexperienced user and especially for people that are familiar
with commercial systems or PCs. No Unix experience is needed and an extensive set of
handouts will be given to each participant.
Wednesday 23 September 1998 - HP-UX Advanced System Administration for UX 10 and 11 -
a one day seminar by Bill Hassell from the HP Atlanta Response Centre
This course is designed to address users of existing 10.x systems as well as new 11.0 systems.
Relax in this all day seminar and learn about managing 10.xx systems, both 800 servers as
well as 700 workstations. The Advanced Seminar is about managing disk space, keeping
the network and the spooler running, adding/deleting users, and best of all, having your
computer do it all automatically. This seminar will talk about managing single and multiple
systems and how to manage patches, distributing software and how to standardize multiple
systems. Common admin problems such as email, disk quotas, sharing data through NFS
and ftp, PC integration, giving everyone access to the documentation, and LVM will be
discussed. There will be an overview of performance tools and techniques used for kernel
tuning. The course covers areas such as: Networking, setting up new users and root, letting
cron work for you, spooler management, backup strategies, security basics, multi-system
management, and how to deal with system crashes and hangs. There are more than 100
pages of handouts and cookbook procedures for the class, designed for both the new system
administrator as well as the seasoned veteran.
The day will also include the latest on HP-UX 11.0 - it is very new and is in limited
implementation (ie no series 700 support at the time of going to press). From a sysadmin
point of view, most of the details are in the installation differences and rewriting programs
to take advantage of large data spaces. It is hoped that there will be time in the
programme for inclusion of large RAM management as well as more information on
swapspace.
Lunches and snacks will be available within the exhibition area. Teas and coffees are included in the price. Venue and hotel accommodation information will be sent out to delegates once their booking has been received.
