INTEGRATION OF UNIX AND NT - LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

HP Bracknell - Tuesday 10 June 1997

10.00 Registration and coffee

10.30 Update on the Latest Developments in UNIX and NT Integration, Directions and Challenges, including the Microsoft / Hewlett-Packard Initiative - Andy Wray, HP

This will outline the HP perspective, following the 12 March '97 announcement on HP's Colliance Programme, the HP-UX and Microsoft Windows NT Integration Initiative. Integration issues such as file-sharing; printing; directory services; management; object technologies; email and messaging, and other challenges in a mixed environment will be discussed, with a brief overview of what is and what is not possible.

11.30 Coffee

11.45 NTrigue - Deliver NT Applications to Unix Workstations, X Terminals and all Enterprise Desktops - Andy Warriner, Insignia Solutions

NTrigue is a software product which includes WindowsNT Server, developed by Insignia Solutions and now sold in Europe by HP, with support provided by HP's Response Centres. This presentation will give an overview of the architecture and functionality of NTrigue, with some sample configurations and hardware requirements.

12.15 Seamless Integration of UNIX resources in a Windows NT Environment - Julian Stone, Hummingbird

This presentation from a leading supplier of PC to host integration software, will cover issues involved when integrating server based software and resources - how do we read files on a Windows NT PC from a UNIX server? - How do we access host applications from the NT PC? - How to share resources in a multi operating system environment?

12.45 Lunch

13.45 Practical Issues when Integrating NT in a UNIX Environment - Howard Wilkinson, Orb Integration Technologists

Many sites have now implemented various solutions to the challenge of NT/UNIX integration. This session reviews some of the primary issues involved in putting together a working environment. In particular, what planning is necessary before implementing solutions onto existing network topologies, and the implications for network administration.

14.45 Towards a Secure, Maintainable and Replicatable Windows NT 4.0 Desktop for Education - Peter Rands, UCS PC-Support, University of Newcastle

Resources, History and User volume makes multi-user computing in education a challenging task. Migrating a Windows 3.1 / Netware 3.12 Client Server based desktop, currently supporting 20,000 users on 700 public machines, to Windows NT 4.0 / Netware 3.12 is progressing. We plan to roll-out 30-40% desktop replacement soon.

15.30 Hardware Implications of NT/UNIX Integration - Steve Boniwell, ABC Workstation Solutions

Various software products are now readily available to facilitate the integration of UNIX and NT in a practical, working environment. In many cases these may impose unexpected demands on the hardware in the network concerned. This discussion considers the hardware issues involved in a mixed environment and presents some techniques for easing and administering the integration process.

16.00 Open Discussion over a cup of tea

16.30 Close
