Bill Hassell's System Administration Seminars As part of HP Users 99 19 and 20 October 1999
The days will run from 09.00 (please register by 08.45) until 17.00 with breaks for refreshments in the exhibition hall.
HP/Works has not been involved in organising these presentations. Nevertheless we could not let the opportunity of hearing Bill pass without letting you know. Bill is always worth listening to, and we anticipate inviting him back to another HP/Works event next year.
HP-UX BOOT CAMP
You've got a new HP-UX box but don't know anything about it? Come to HP-UX Boot Camp where the basics of HP-UX are the order of the day. In this 6-8 hour class, you'll learn some history of Unix and HP-UX, the basic commands for HP-UX and pointers to documentation, both online and through the Internet. We'll cover basic file commands, directories, simple security principles, printing, and even a short course on using vi.
Boot Camp is designed exclusively for the new and inexperienced user and especially for people that are familiar with commercial systems or PCs. No Unix experience is needed and an extensive set of handouts will be given to each participant.
HP-UX SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION SUMMER CAMP
You've graduated from HP-UX Boot Camp so now we need learn System Administration for our shiny new computers and Summer Camp is just the place! Relax in this all day seminar and learn about managing 10.xx systems, both 800 servers as well as 700 workstations. Bill is back to transform newbies into seasoned gurus in the world of HP-UX. Summer Camp is about managing disk space, keeping the network and the spooler running, adding/deleting users, and best of all, having your computer do it all automatically.
This seminar will talk about managing single and multiple systems, distributing software and patches and how to standardise/inventory multiple systems. Common admin problems such as email, disk quotas and LVM will be discussed as well as an overview of performance tools and techniques used for kernel tuning. Even some information on sharing data through NFS and ftp with a smattering of PC integration will be part of the program and of course, how to give everyone access to the documentation. An overview of 11.0 is also included.
It's Summer Camp for HP-UX! This course covers areas such as: Networking, setting up new users and root, letting cron work for you, spooler management, backup strategies, security basics, multi-system management, and how to deal with system crashes and hangs. There are more than 140 pages of handouts and cookbook procedures for the class, designed for both the new sysadmin as well as the seasoned veteran.
