THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2000 - FAQs and Answers for HP-UX SysAdmins - Part One



Managing HP9000 systems, whether servers or workstations, can be easy with the right answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). This seminar will look at sysadmin checklists, scripts to make managing the systems easier, performance issues, and kernel tuning. It will cover management issues for multiple systems, ways to inventory systems and keep changes under control, and tips for setting up centralised software depots for patches and updates. We'll go over the steps needed to standardise (and simplify) new system installations.



WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This seminar is designed for anyone doing system administration on HP9000 computers, versions 10.xx and 11.xx. It is an intermediate level, but advanced administrators will also find the information valuable, as there will be extensive handouts with sysadmin ideas and examples.



TECHNICAL LEVEL: Advanced/Intermediate.



ATTENDEES WILL LEARN:

· How to use scripting to perform automated sysadmin functions

· How to collect an inventory for one to many systems, including processor speed, RAM, disk layouts, etc.

· How to set up new systems and keep them patched and in sync

Topics include automating new user setups, preparing for crash dumps and knowing how to read them, managing disk space and user resources, and using tips for interoperating with each other systems such as NT and Linux.



WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This seminar is designed for anyone doing system administration on HP9000 computers, versions 10.xx and 11.xx. It is an intermediate level, but advanced administrators will also find the information valuable, as there will be extensive handouts with sysadmin ideas and examples.

Bill Hassell is a system administration technology engineer at the HP Atlanta Response Centre, where he does remote and on-site HP-UX technology projects for customers and assists internal HP engineers. He has been with HP for more than 20 years and is currently working on a book called the HP-UX System Administrator's Survival Guide (Prentice-Hall).
