As LINUX becomes more widespread in the installed base, specialised applications are being developed to make practical uses of its capabilities. Today's sessions look at the benefits that the use of LINUX in the Appliance arena can bring. The theme is developed by looking at some existing appliances that are available based on LINUX systems. The presenters for the day will be Howard Wilkinson of Coherent Technology and Steve Boniwell of ABC Solutions.

Topics to be covered:

Why use LINUX for Appliances? - What is an Appliance and why LINUX is a good base system for developing these systems

Remote Management and Configuration - A user perspective of experiences in this area

Firewalls and Security - A discussion of some existing firewalls appliances and their implementation

Network Monitoring System - A LINUX based Network Monitoring Appliance that can be implemented regardless of the existing architecture within a network. This demonstrates a cost effective way in which an appliance can be used to troubleshoot networks in a pro-active manner
